The R-Word
What is it?
The R-Word refers to the word "Retard" and is commonly used in a derogatory manner towards other people. This word stems from the medical term “Retardation” or “Mental Retardation” which is a generalized neurodevelopmental disorder that is characterized by significant impairment with intellectual and adaptive functions. The R-word is generally used in social environments, where it is used to compare a person(s’) actions to the disorder. The comparison between a person and the disorder implies that the person acts in such a way that portrays the individual as a person living with the disorder.
Why don’t we say it?
The use of the R-word is extremely demeaning because of the negative connotation it carries and how it is used in social settings. Regardless of the word coming from the medical term "Mental Retardation", it dehumanizes those who suffer from the impairment; in other words, when a person uses the term in a disrespectful manner, it offends those with the disability. Constant use of the R-word also perpetuates negative stereotypes about people with intellectual disabilities being less valuable members of humanity; this is completely wrong. A person does not need to possess the same level of intellect as others around them to have dignity. SDC’s goal is to empower youth to empower children with disabilities. Using the R-word not only goes against everything our organization stands for, but is simply unacceptable.
What can you do to help stop the use of the R-word?
Our organization aims to stop the use of the R-word by educating those who use the term in a negative manner on the reasons they should not use the term. The continuous use of the R-word prevents us from empowering children with disabilities, which is why we encourage you to help us stop the use of the term. You are able to help us by stopping those around you who use the term frequently, and educate them on the reasons it is insulting to those who live with the disorder; it puts down and alienates those individuals who have the intellectual disability from the rest of society. With your help, SDC hopes to one day end the use of the derogatory connotation of this term, and will continue to strive to empower children with disabilities. Help us create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all.
