Building Bridges with Music 2020

Building Bridges with Music, SDC’s music therapy program, is one of our most treasured initiatives. Since SDC was founded 10 years ago, we have seen countless children join us in celebrating both music and each other. It was with great eagerness that SDC looked forward to our 2020 spring session of BBM, and with great sadness that we realized COVID-19 would make in-person meetings impossible.

But trying times call for creative solutions. SDC realizes that in this time of uncertainty, providing hope and letting children connect with each other is more important than ever. In response to the guidelines imposed by health officials to combat COVID-19, SDC is continuing to host Building Bridges with Music Online!

Building Bridges with Music Online allows children of all capabilities to come together and virtually enjoy music in a variety of ways. In each session, Ms. Breanne Smith engages the class through vocal warmups, audio recordings, and colourful music videos. New and creative activities are introduced weekly! The children learn to pair fun actions to music, break down meaning from song lyrics and even learn sign language!

Every class is accompanied by a different musical theme, ranging from animals, to Disney, to the Beatles and many more! In one memorable session centred around bears, we watched children bring stuffed animals to their computer screens and to accompany songs such as “Rockabye Bear” and “The Bear Went Over the Mountain.”

The responses we have received since the launch of our online program has been overwhelmingly positive. Our experiences so far have shown us that there will always be a way to foster connections, no matter the circumstances. We have seen so many new and returning faces come together to share the joy of music and are excited to see even more.

Building Bridges with Music Online runs via Google Meets twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays and is separated into two groups: Juniors from 4:15 - 5:00 PM  and Seniors from 5:15 - 6:00 PM PST (1:15-2:00 and 2:15-3:00 PM EST). Visit our website and follow us on social media to see updates about how BBM Online is continuing to grow!

Please do not hesitate to email info@socialdiversity.org for information on how to join in our next session!
