Why Building Bridges with Music?
Building Bridges with Music remains as one of Social Diversity for Children’s core programs. Back in 2011, our founder David Wang noticed that many children with special needs were not very vocal in many settings. However, he saw joy and connections created when the children sang songs. David combined the two; thus creating Building Bridges with Music.
Building Bridges with Music is a music program, where children of all abilities can come together, using music as a medium. Music programs present many benefits, ultimately encouraging children to reach their fullest potential. Each session incorporates a variety of engaging and fun activities. Regardless if the children are immersed in song, or trying new instruments, every session grants the children a chance to express themselves. Through these sessions guided by an experienced music teacher, children can achieve physical, emotional and social goals.
Classes often centre around a collection of songs, accompanied with actions for the children to follow. These movements to music develops and maintains muscle strength, range of motion, hand-eye coordination, and many other physical skills. Even amidst the current situation due to COVID-19, we have found ways to safely continue BBM. The program has branched off into “Building Bridges with Music Online” and “Melodies in Nature”. All BBM Online sessions are held on a Google Meets video call, allowing fun and creative activities to still take place. In a recent June BBM Online session, participants brought a stuffed bear to accompany singing songs such as “Teddy Bear Teddy Bear Turn Around” and “Rock A Bye Bear”. Through these interactive activities, children can also develop breath-control, articulation, and overall improve their communication abilities.
Furthermore, through these engaging sessions, children increase their self-confidence and self-esteem with the positive environment for growth. Music can match the individual’s motions in rhythm and tempo, providing a safe space for children to challenge themselves, while also experiencing success. These shared experiences with other participants can foster connection as they all work towards a common goal. Communication can be challenging for children with disabilities, which may leave them feeling isolated. Through music programs, participants engage in real connection with others, enabling them to feel seen and acknowledged.
Within the past ten years, Building Bridges with Music has witnessed countless children celebrating music, and creating newfound friendships with one another. This safe space has inspired the children, volunteers, and teachers through every song and dance performed. Every child contains immeasurable light and beauty, and SDC has been remarkably privileged to assist these children as they discover their inherent gifts and value.
Building Bridges with Music currently runs via Google Meets twice a week on Mondays and Tuesdays. Visit our website and follow us on social media to see updates on the program!
